Questions

Scrapping a car: your questions answered

Everything people in Slough ask us about valuations, collection and the paperwork.

What will I get for my car?

That depends on the make, model, age and condition. Send us the registration and postcode and our team will come back to you with a valuation.

Is there anything to pay?

No. Collection is free, there are no admin charges, nothing hidden, and nothing to pay if you decide not to go ahead.

How soon can the car be collected?

That's up to you. Once you have your quote, collection is booked at a time that suits you, so it can be as quick as you need it to be.

Will you take a car that won't start?

Yes. Non-starters, SORN cars, MOT failures, write-offs, rusty or broken cars: the condition doesn't put us off.

Do I need the keys?

Not always. Mention it to the buyer when they ring to book the collection and they'll tell you what they need.

The car isn't at my address. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Cars are collected from all sorts of places. Just enter the postcode where the car actually is, so your details reach the buyer who covers that area.

Who sends me the Certificate of Destruction?

The Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) that scraps the car sends it straight to you. When it arrives, let DVLA know.

Can I get my vehicle tax back?

Yes. DVLA refunds any full months of tax left once it knows the car has been scrapped. See GOV.UK for the details.

I want to keep my private plate. What do I do?

Apply to DVLA to move it to another vehicle or put it on retention, and do it before the car is collected. Once the car has gone, the plate goes with it.

Some parts are missing from the car. Does that matter?

Quotes assume the car is complete. If parts have been taken off, the valuer may need to change the price, and you're free to say no if you'd rather not go ahead.

Nobody has called me yet. What now?

Give it about an hour after your quote reaches the valuer. If you still haven't heard anything, ring us on 01753 320 280.

Does every car end up scrapped?

Most do, under the End of Life Vehicles regulations. A car that can be safely and legally repaired may be put back on the road instead.

Is all of this legal?

Yes. The drivers are licensed waste carriers, and cars go to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where they're scrapped under government rules.
